Day 3: Ely to Las Vegas
Good morning from Lake Las Vegas, what a difference an afternoon of relaxing and good night’s sleep makes. I’m sitting here watching the dogs play for the first time during this trip. It wasn’t until we arrived at my friend Suzanne’s house yesterday afternoon that I realized the amount of tension that had built up, probably in all 3 of us over the last three days of travel. The physical and mental unwinding was such a relief as we sat around and visited, the dogs exploring every inch of their beautiful house and yard. I suspect that much of my tension was self inflicted, trying to anticipate and stay ahead of anything that could happen. The dogs most likely picked up on that tension as well so it was a vicious cycle. Now that I know what works better for us, I’m hoping the future trips will be less stressful.
While I’d seen snow in the forecast for Ely, I was still surprised to see it snowing when we woke up. It continued to snow even as we started our drive. Luckily it was not so cold that the roads were icy and the snow covered mountains that we drive through were so pretty.
The view from our hotel room, the hotel was surprisingly full for such a small town.
The Nevada forest in the Egan Range.
After a lot of miles on perfectly straight roads heading south, we had one charging stop in Glendale where I ate my lunch. At this point, we’ve got our charging stop routine dialed in. I start the car charging, walk the dogs for a bit, eat my lunch and then catch up on texts and emails. If we have more time, I read until the car is done charging. Then it’s just a matter of unhooking the car and getting back on our way.
The ridiculously large, but invaluable, electric cooler.
Today we have another shorter day as we head “home” to the RV. We will leave here by mid-morning, stop to charge in Kingman, AZ and then tackle the last stretch into El Mirage. I’ve only bought one meal on this trip, the door dash Thai dinner on Monday night which I ate for leftovers in Ely. That streak will end today with an In-n-Out burger for lunch.
As I walked the dogs this morning, a sliver moon was watching over us. The moon has been a constant as I’ve navigated the last month, a full moon watching over the more challenging times. When I was in Arizona setting up the RV, the moon was visible throughout the day. I know that Obie is watching over us as we continue to navigate life without his physical presence.
